The Process

Step One - Figure out who are your friends and who are your enemies

You need to find out who is on your side.  To do this you will split up into groups of four.  You will print off the following sheet to help aid you in this task.  Each of you is responsible for your own paper, so you will have to print four copies.  Ask the teacher for help with this if you have a problem.

FRIENDS AND FOES SHEET

Then you will go to the Foss website's insect hunt by clicking on the link below.  When you get the the Foss website, double click on the words "Insect Hunt" to go on an insect hunt to find friends and enemies.  You will be able to find your friends by moving the magnifying glass over different bugs and animals and answering the questions on the sheet about each.  Don't forget to check both the land and the pond.  You will have one period of computer lab to finish this (about 45 minutes).

Step Two- Who will make the best soldiers?

Now that you know who is on your side and who isn't, you will need to figure out which insects would make good soldiers for your army.  In your groups of four find information about each of the following insects by following the links below.  Make sure you take notes so you can remember the information about each insect.  Try to figure out which insects are good fighters.  Good fighters make good soldiers.  You will have two computer lab periods to complete this (about 1 hour and a half total).

Step Three- Who did you pick as your soldiers?

Out of the six insects that you learned about from the links above, you and your group will pick four insects that you think will make the best soldiers.  You will get some posterboard from your teacher and create a poster showing the four insect soldiers you picked.  For each soldier, you should draw a picture and give some facts why you picked that insect as a soldier.  Explain why you think it would make a good soldier for your army. A template of the poster is shown below.  Each of you will be responsible one insect on the poster.  Make sure you draw a good picture of the insect and give good, detailed reasons why you picked that insect as a soldier.  You will have three periods of about an hour in the classroom to work on this step.

Step Four- Presenting your army to the class

You and your group will present your poster and soldiers to the class.  Each person in your group will talk about the insect that you drew and wrote about on the poster.  You will also answer questions from the class.
