Drawing and Painting Tools


Objectives:
Students will:
  • Identify whether teachers may use digitally copyrighted materials in public elementary classrooms.
  • Identify legal, ethical, and human practice relating to technology use by minors.
  • Identify potential ethical problems children face when accessing the Internet; and, provide safe and healthy solutions for addressing those problems.
  • Differentiate between drawing and painting with technology.
  • Competently use drawing and painting tools to construct educational materials.

2D. Teachers plans for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

Don't Copy That Floppy (10 minutes)

Show the video Don't Copy That Floppy (published by the Software Privacy Association).

Upon completion of the video, ask students:
  • What was the point of this video?
  • How does this video relate to your readings on copyright and fair use?
Opening (5 minutes)
  • Announce daily outline.
  • Announce daily objectives.
Lecture: Digital Media -- Copyright and Safety (10 minutes) - see lecture slides hear audio

Hand students a copy of Davidson's copyright chart and lecture on fair use in educational contexts. Then, lecture on the importance of also teaching students to use technology ethically and safely.

Ask students: Is it ethical for teachers to use graphics they find on the World Wide Web in their lecture slides?
Demonstrate: Drawing Tools (25 minutes) — see demonstration  video

Show a video differentiating between painting and drawing. Demonstrate features of drawing and painting within Microsoft Word by creating a class newsletter (see example). Be sure to address the following features of drawing/painting features:
  • 3-D and 2-D geometric shapes
  • Fill, line, and color tools
  • Arrows
  • Text boxes
  • Select/Deselect with lasso
  • Select and drag
  • Resize
  • Arrange
  • Group/Ungroup
  • Shadow
  • Align
  • Rotate, flip
  • Move to front/back
  • Word Art
  • Crop
  • Clip art
  • Copy/paste pictures from the Internet
Show students an example certificate and ask them to identify the elements used to develop it.

Closing
(5 minutes)

  • Review daily outline and objectives.
  • Review readings and assign reading quiz for next session.
  • Assign the Open House Flyer.
  • Invite two students to present their lesson plans during the next class session.
