Lesson Plan:
Materials Evaluation

Objectives:
Students will:
  • Collect data using online survey applications.
  • Utilize technologically-derived data to make recommended changes to curriculum and instruction.
  • Critically evaluate peer’s lesson plans and instructional slideshows.
  • Evaluate digital educational materials.
  • Competently use drawing and painting tools to construct educational materials.
NETS-T Standards:

1A. Teachers demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.
3A. Teachers facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
3B. Teachers use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
4B. Teachers use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

Materials:
Procedures:

If selection of student volunteers is not complete, place the numbers “1” and “2” on the board. The first two students arriving in the classroom who wish to present to the class for extra credit may place their names in either of these two spots. The first arrival gets first selection.

Assign three students to assist with the lesson presentation process.
  • Assign one student who will not be presenting to collect the peer evaluation forms. Provide this individual with a basket, two envelopes, and a Sharpie marker. Tell the student to collect the forms when directed, place the forms in an envelope, seal the envelope, and write the student presenter's name on the front of the envelope. They should then deliver the envelope to the student presenter.
  • Assign a second student to time each presentation using an online timer. Each presenter will have five minutes to present.
  • Prepare a digital video recorder and tripod to record the lesson presentations. Train the third student to use the videocamera and have that individual videotape each lesson presentation.

Sponge Activity: Collecting Data for Teacher Improvement
(5 minutes)

As students enter the room, have them go to an online course evaluation prepared using Zoomerang. Have them complete the online survey.

Opening (5 minutes)
  • Announce daily outline.
  • Announce daily objectives.
Class Discussion: Online Surveys (10 minutes)

Ask students:
  • What did you think of completing the online form? Follow their answers by describing Zoomerang.
  • How can this technology serve as a tool to:
    • Assess your teaching?
    • Assess student learning?
    • Instruct?
Individual Presentations: Lesson Plan I and Slideshow (30 minutes)

Video record two students as they describe their Lesson Plan I lessons and demonstrate their PowerPoint lesson slides to the class. As a class, critically evaluate their slides using the elements on the slideshow peer evaluation form and discuss specific elements of the lesson as a class, identifying areas of strength and areas needing improvement. Also, allow the audience to ask questions of the presenter relating to techniques used in the development of the slideshow and provide time for the developer to demonstrate these skills.

Guided Practice: Using Data to Improve Instruction (10 minutes)

Place the results of the  mid-course evaluation on the classroom screen and ask students to independently analyze the results based on full class feedback (not their own responses).

Once students complete their independent observations, call them together and ask what recommendations they have to improve this class based on the data. Use this opportunity to display proper etiquette for accepting professional criticism.

Explain to students that accepting feedback and working to improve teaching as a result are expected professional behaviors within schools. Also, review the following NETS-T standard:

"4B. Teachers use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning."

Demonstrate: Drawing Tools
(10 minutes) — see graphics videos (PowerPoint/Word)

Review drawing and painting skills by answering students questions or providing individual assistance to students.

Closing
(5 minutes)

Absence Requirements
  1. Review this lesson plan, and the lecture slides.
  2. Complete the online evaluation form and answer the following questions in short answer format:
    • What did you think of completing the online form?
    • How can this technology serve as a tool to:
      • Assess your teaching?
      • Assess student learning?
      • Instruct?
  3. Review videos (available in the group section of NetStorage) of the two lesson plan presentations and evaluate each using the slideshow peer evaluation form.
