Following completing a reading
on the future of instruction, students worked
in groups to envision their future social studies classrooms. One
of the unique visions included in this map is the inclusion of an
interactive timeline. Students in Fall of 2007 envisioned a timeline
that would span the classroom. When their students push a button on the
timeline, they receive audio, video, and textual descriptions of the
given time period.

A student works
diligently with chalk to create a playground map of the U.S.A.
After completing maps of the world,
U.S.,
and Nevada,
both undergraduate and graduate students returned to the UNLV classroom for a lesson
on integrating playground maps into elementary social studies
curricula.

During a lesson
on elementary school social studies learning centers, students in UNLV's ICE 458 worked with
boxes, markers, butcher paper, tape, scissors, and a sheet to develop
their own Box
City.

Completed
during the mock trial of B.B.
Wolf v. Curly Pig,
this artist's sketch demonstrates the pre-trial feelings of the
community. Note that in one of the mock trials the pig was found guilty
of attempted wolf poaching, and in the other three trials, the jury
offered an
innocent verdict. Click here
for more artist renditions of the trials or for the lesson
plan and click here for a video of the presentation.
Here is one student's mock newspaper report of the event:
"The much talked-about court case reached its conclusion Tuesday,
November 14, 2006. The lawsuit initiated by B.B. Wolf against Curly Pig
for intent to “wolf poach” ended with a unanimous decision by the jury.
Wolf’s lawyer stated Curly Pig had the intent to kill B.B. Wolf;
however, Curly’s lawyer rebutted Pig was minding his own business.
Curly Pig was found innocent. No appeal has been filed by Wolf to
date."

Dr.
Doris Dwyer, professor of history at Western Nevada Community College,
portrays Margaret Breen, a survivor of the Donner Party. The Chautauqua
presentation was part of ICE 458/CIE 658 ("Teaching Elementary School
Social Studies") and focused on using dramatic performance to teach
history. The UNLV class met at
Paradise Professional Development School where they enjoyed the compa ny of classes of
fourth and fifth graders.
Another section enjoyed the presentation of President Theodore
Roosevelt as portrayed by Doug Mishler of the University of Nevada,
Reno. The Roosevelt presentation was delivered jointly to ICE 458
students and students living in UNLV's
Tonopah Residence Hall.
