View National Geographic Society's Voyage of Discovery (15 minutes)

Show the video Voyage of Discovery.

Ask students to identify possible social studies unit themes that could come from the video. Have one student write these themes on the board.

When a student mentions maps, introduce students to Map TOADS and inform them of Map TOADS lesson plans (Geographical Me, Five Themes of Las Vegas, Five Themes of Nevada) available online. When a student mentions one of the five themes of geography, introduce all of the five themes. Tell students  we will do a lesson on the five themes later in the semester, but there are also lesson plans available on this topic.

Opening (5 minutes)
  • Review daily objectives.
  • Review daily outline.
Lecture: Interdisciplinary Unit Planning  (20 minutes) -- see lecture slides; hear audio
  • Describe the purpose for interdisciplinary planning at the elementary level and suggest methods for developing interdisciplinary plans.
    • Impress upon students the benefits of using social studies content as the primary theme for interdisciplinary units.
    • Provide an example of an interdisciplinary unit plan.
    • Explain to students that they will work in groups of four-to-five to develop an interdisciplinary unit plan based on the video.
Guided Practice: Interdisciplinary Unit Planning (30 minutes)

Students will work in groups to develop a five-day, theme-based interdisciplinary unit plan using one of the themes addressed in the video. Provide each group with one copy of the interdisciplinary unit planning form and a laptop computer with Internet access (to access the online unit planning form). Each group will begin by selecting its overall theme and identify specific themes for each day of the unit. They will continue on this activity in the next class session. Have groups save their interdisciplinary unit plans to a flash drive and also email their groups' plans to each group member.

Closing (5 minutes)
  • Review daily objectives and outline.
  • Assign readings and remind students to complete their reading synopses/syntheses.
  • Have students think about ideas, activities, and materials for their interdisciplinary unit plans.
  • Have students continue working on their individual Lesson Plan assignments.
  • Remind students to dress for the outdoors and to be sitting on the ground for next session.

Absence Requirements
  1. Review this lesson plan and the associated lesson slides and audio.
  2. Review an educational video and identify at least ten related social studies themes.
  3. Review the example interdisciplinary unit plan.
  4. Use the interdisciplinary unit plan form to begin developing an interdisciplinary unit. The unit must <>use a theme from the list you formed from the video and be five days in length.
For this part of the assignment, you must determine the daily themes (as they relate to the general theme of your unit) and include some activities for the social studies strand each day. You do not need to complete planning for all subject areas, nor do you need to provide a detailed list of daily social studies activities (you will add these details during the next class session).
