Plants Grow
Objective:
Students will investigate, observe, and describe how plants
grow. CEF (2)2.2
Needed Materials:
- Activity
sheet for each
child
- Plant seeds: corn and tomato
- Clear plastic cups: oner per child
- Small cup of water for each child
- Markers to write on the cups
- Potting soil for each child
- Daily Log homework sheet:
one for each child
- Projector for slide show
Procedure
Sponge Activity:
Tell the students to think about what kind of plant they
would like to grow: corn or tomato.
Anticipatory Set:
What makes plants grow?
Lecture:
- Explain the process of growing plants
- Plant seeds
- Water
- Provide sunlight
Activity:
- Give each child a plastic cup and seeds.
- Have them label the cups with their names and what kind of
seeds they have.
- Give each child a small pile of potting soil. Have
them fill each cup half way with soil.
- Have them put three seeds on top of the soil, then put
another handful of soil on top of the seeds.
- Tell them to lightly pat down the soil.
- Have them water their seeds and put them in the sunlight.
- Have them wash their hands and return to their desks.
Closure:
- Ask the students what will happen to the seeds?
- How will the sunlight and the water help them grow?
Assessment:
- Have the students fill out the first portion of their daily
log.
- Have them record the the plant's growth until it reaches
two inches.
