The 2009 season of Challenger Little League of Southern Nevada started on Saturday, March 7, 2009, playing on the brand new field at the Myron Leavitt Family Park (formally Jaycee Park). We kicked off the season with two Special Guest Pitchers, Shirley Leavitt and Judge Michelle Leavitt, who threw out the 1st pitch.

"The Project is designed to provide opportunities for all children to play baseball regardless of their ability. The proposed site plan consists of a smaller-than-regulation, modified little league field consisting of a flat, rubberized surface to accommodate visually and otherwise disabled participants. Two wheelchair accessible dugouts, three sets of bleachers and a trash enclosure will accompany the field. A 1,200 square-foot accessible restroom, snack bar and storage facility will be located to the west of the field; and an accessible playground and tree-house play structure will be built to the east of the field. Additional handicapped parking will be included. Landscape plans include 56 trees, 456 five gallon shrubs, 142 one gallon shrubs, and 52 landscape boulders."
Check out the new field site and site plans here.

Teams are made up of children ages 5 through 18 (or the completion of school) with physical or mental disabilities. This is a no practice league (games only) with an emphasis on the fundamentals of hitting, throwing, catching, and teamwork.
Players should arrive at least 15 minutes before game time to stretch and warm-up. The batters and catchers will wear a helmet during batting.
|
Games may be from 2 to 4 innings depending on the time and weather. Players may hit off a tee or hit a coach pitch. Buddies are available to assist players in hitting and/or fielding. Multiple balls are used in the field to keep participation levels high. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the entire roster. No player will ever be called "out." Everyone involved can enjoy Challenger Little League.

An important part of the Challenger Division program are the volunteer Coaches and Team Moms that help organize the teams and conduct the games on the field. The Coaches play the role of pitcher, keeping the flow of the game going, and tossing out a few extra balls to keep every player involved. A Team Mom is assigned to each team to help with communication, scheduling, pictures and volunteer management within their respective team’s families.
|
Challenger Buddies are family members or friends that help their challenged partners by acting as guides for blind children, by pushing wheelchair-bound children around the bases, or by helping them bat or field the ball.
|
Challenger Little league is not a drop off program, parents and families stay and cheer on the team.
