U.S History Chase

Grade Level: 5th

Unit Title: Research and Inquiry


Objectives:

  •          Groups will formulate 1-2 questions they would like answered about an assigned figure     in history.

  •      Groups will use library research through internet, books, and journals to answer their questions.
  •         Groups will document necessary information according to lecture and handout.

 ISTE NETS-S Standards Addressed (Identify 2-5 standards this lesson addresses.):

Needed Materials:

    •        6-8 PCs (Library/Computer Room Day)
       
Question formulator Handout
        Documentation handout
    •        Extra large post it for anticipatory set questions or link to the adjunct Powerpoint.

  Procedure
 

            Sponge Activity: Students will be asked to pick a number out of hat which will place them             in groups of 4-6. (5 minutes maximum)

Tell students the daily outline and objectives (3 minutes)

(5) 11.1 formulate research questions and establish a focus and purpose for inquiry

(5) 11.2 select information from multiple resources to answer questions

(5) 11.3 list sources used in research

 Anticipatory Set; “If you could ask this figure in history a question what would it be?” (Explain that questions should be within reason.) Students will decide on 2 group questions to find out about their figure in history through books, magazine/newspaper or websites.  Inquiry sheet will provide a guide for questions. (5 minutes)

 Lecture: Students will be lectured on proper use of the computer research methods and documentation of sources. Websites will be provided to each group as part of the Inquiry Sheet. Students will also receive a documentation guide sheet. (5-10 minutes)

 Activity:  Students will work collaboratively to find the answers to questions they have posed by using multiple resources i.e.; hardcopy and internet. Answers must be found within 20 minutes. Then they will properly document their findings.

 Review: Remind students that most inquiries can be researched through the internet or hardcopy (books, papers, magazines, etc.).  Remind them that answers are available if you know where to look for them.  Remind students of documentation and its importance. (3 minutes)

             Closure: “Please bring your documentation forms to class tomorrow.  They will be

   used in our discussion of Copyright infringement! (4 minutes)
