Teacher: Sara Abtahi
Subject Area: Science
Grade Level: 1
Lesson Title: The Four Seasons
Objective: (1)3.1 Describe seasonal changes over time.
[NS 13.12]
Needed Materials:
- “Caps, Hats, Socks,
and Mittens” by Louise Borden
- Four large pieces of
construction paper: blue, pink, yellow, and orange
- Various magazines printed
during each season
- Scissors and paste
for each student
- Homework sheet
Procedure
Sponge Activity: Students will proceed to the reading center for
“circle time”. The teacher will read “Caps, Hats, Socks,
and Mittens”.
Anticipatory Set:
What is the weather like today? Does anyone know a holiday that is
coming up? What activities or
games do you play when it is sunny and warm outside;
when it is rainy?
Lecture: Describe
the four different seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Describe
the weather, months, activities,
and holidays which typically correlate with each
season. Use lecture slides to supplement lecture. Allow students to
contribute different activities they participate in throughout
discussion.
Activity: Separate
students into groups of four. Assign each group a different season.
With the magazines provided have
students cut out pictures of holidays, activities, and weather
pertaining to their group’s season and paste on large
construction paper.
Closure:
Students will return to the reading center and the groups will loosely present
their work to rest of the class.
Throughout presentations
discuss each season. Ask students which months it occurs, what the weather
is like, and what
activities we usually participate in to reiterate lecture.
Assessment: Students will complete a homework
sheet which requires matching different pictures of activities and weather
to its corresponding month. Students will fill in the sentence: My favorite
season is ______________.
